ARIELLA IVES, BA, MA, Director
Ariella Ives, center Director, earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Barnard College of Columbia University and her Master of Sciences degree in Communicative Disorders from California State University, Northridge. Ariella earned her Certificate of Clinical Competence in 2002 after working in early intervention. She also holds a California license to practice speech-language pathology.
Ariella was hired by the Los Angeles Scottish Rite Childhood Language Center in December 2005 to be the Director and to revitalize and expand service delivery. During her time at the center, she has increased both the number of children receiving services and the number of times per week children receive therapy.
She has also instituted the Speech Improvement Class, an intensive articulation group targeted to children who have one or two sounds in error. Additionally, Ariella has completely revamped the center’s screening process to make it more comprehensive and user friendly for parents and other professionals.
Assisting and guiding children and their families is a pleasure and an honor for Ariella. She strongly believes that the service provided by the Childhood Language Center is unmatched anywhere and she is proud of the accomplishments of her staff and the children they serve.
MIKI HUBER, BA, MA,Reading Specialist
Miki Huber is the reading specialist at the Los Angeles Center. She completed her certification as an Academic Language Therapist through Teachers College at Columbia University in New York and holds a Masters in Psychology and Language Processes from Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, New York. She is also an active member of the Association of Educational Therapists.
In addition to her work at the Scottish Rite Childhood Language Center, Miki has maintained a private practice for over 12 years and developed the Creative Learning Therapy program, drawing on her background in music, theater, and art to help children tap into the creative aspects of language and communication.
Prior to private practice, Miki worked as a clinician and assistant personnel trainer at Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes. Miki provides invaluable expertise in reading and writing disorders which allows the staff at the center to provide a level of comprehensive diagnosis and treatment unmatched by most practitioners.
SUSAN MILLER, BA, MA,Speech and Language Pathologist
Susan Miller is a licensed speech and language pathologist. She holds a Certificate of Clinical Competency (CCC) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and a credential from the California Department of Education for Clinical Rehabilitation in the areas of speech, language, and hearing.
Susan received her clinical training at Western Washington University. Her graduate research focused on cultural and language differences, and how these differences affect assessment and treatment of communication disorders.
She has worked in many different settings, including migrant farm workers’ camps, Head Start classrooms, pediatric hospital wards, schools, and private practice. Susan has a deep respect and appreciation for the uniqueness of each child. She says, “I love my work at Los Angeles Scottish Rite Childhood Language Center. There is a commitment here to deliver family-centered, state-of-the-art therapeutic services, and I am excited to be a part of it.”
SUSAN WETZEL, BA, MA, Speech and Language Pathologist
Susan has been practicing for 18 years. She earned both her Bachelor of Arts and her Master of Arts in Communication Disorders at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. While studying at LSU, she worked as a Teaching Assistant and taught English as a second language to international graduate students. Additionally, she worked with international professors at LSU in the area of accent reduction.
Upon graduation, Susan moved to New Orleans and worked at Health South Rehabilitation Center, serving adults with neurological disorders. Following this, she worked as the lead Speech Pathologist at New Medico Rehabilitation Center. After gaining experience there working with clients with TBI in a community re-entry setting, she opened a private practice in New Orleans. During her many years of private practice, she has worked extensively with children and adults who exhibited a wide range of speech and language disorders. She has worked in a variety of settings, including schools, clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and private homes. Susan believes that being a Speech/Language Pathologist is extremely rewarding. She greatly appreciates the opportunity to serve individuals with speech and language impairments, particularly children.
Susan moved to Los Angeles following Hurricane Katrina and is enjoying all the wonderful and diverse cultures and events this city has to offer.
